No limit to Peru’s blueberry market expansion as it reaches the Maldives

As the Peruvian blueberry season starts to wind down there is no end to the country’s ambitions of reaching new markets with the latest being the Maldives Islands. Peru’s blue gold reached the Maldives for the first time during week 5 of the current 2022/2023 campaign.

The 2022/2023 campaign of the production area Ica ended with a 45% increase from this region. According to Luis Miguel Vegas, manager of Peru’s blueberry organisation Proarandanos: “To date, 23 740 tons have been reached in exports with the Ica region growing by 45% vs. last season's total. Also, during week 7 almost 10 tons were sent, being probably one of the last shipments of the blueberry campaign for this department. Regarding the seasonality of this region, the concentration occurred during the months of September and October, where 57% of the total volume exported was covered. Finally, organic exports from this town totalled 827 tons.”

He is also buoyed that their hard work, together with government officials and industry has opened another new market of Maldives. “We exported the first shipment in week 5 of 383 kg’s by air. The company Exportadora Frutícola del Sur S.A. was the first with this shipment to the Maldives Islands. In this way, with this new market there would be 33 countries to which Peru has sent fresh blueberries during the 2022-2023 campaign,” says Miguel.

Proarandanos provided new figures for organic blueberry exports from Peru. “Organic blueberry shipments during 2022 amounted to 32,343 tons, 69% more than in 2021. 95% of the total was sent to the US. La Libertad concentrated 54% of the total exports while Lambayeque had a share of 23% and together with Ica were the regions that experienced the highest growth (37%). Ica accounted for 8% of total exports. They were followed by Ancash (6%), Lima (6%), Piura (3%) and Moquegua (0.2%),” stated Miguel on behalf of Proarandanos.
