Carrots from Israel in high demand from Europe

Following shortages of vegetables in Spain and England, producers in Israel have seen a spike in demand for carrots. Yacov Mizrahi, CEO of Shallit Carrots, a company based in Israel that grows, packs and exports carrots, says: “We are indeed very busy, but this is a positive thing. After the Fruit Logistica 2023 exhibition, we realized that there is a shortage of carrots in the European market especially in Spain and England due to several factors. Right now, there is a demand of all carrot's sizes from various destinations in Europe and we welcome the fruitful cooperation.”

He says due to a challenging climate, and problems with the agricultural sowing cycle, during the past season, Shallit Carrots has reduced their carrot fields. “The most important is that the 2023 season is very good in Shallit Carrots’ fields. If we will continue to maintain the high quality in the fields and in our packing house - we will reach high yield - per one acre, that will allow us to supply quality carrots to all our customers. Thanks to Shallit’s special sowing method in the fields we manage to achieve high quality and a wide variety of carrot sizes, which faithfully serves the variety of our customers' demands in the market. The sizes range from size M-L to jumbo size. We can note that in the 2023 growing season, all the carrot growers in Israel reduced the carrot fields in the amount of approximately 15% less than the previous season.”

Mizrahi says while in recent weeks the market has been full of movement due to a weaker Israeli Shekel, among other things, the prices of sea transport are still too expensive. “Right now, we see that the Dollar and the Euro are strengthening against the Shekel currency compared to before. Unfortunately, the price of transportation by sea, for one container of carrots, has not yet experienced a significant decrease, but it is at a certain point of decline since the time of the corona virus epidemic and the war in Ukraine. Let's hope that the reasonable prices will return soon, for all of us, this is a significant factor regarding the price of the product itself.”

Shallit Carrots was established as family operated company since 1979. The company grows carrots for 10 months of the year with farms spread in the North, Centre and South of Israel. They have a modern pack house in the central area. In recent years, Shallit Carrots has increased its types of products and focuses on diverse root crops.

Shallit Carrots are embracing the higher demand from Europe and hope to prove they are reliable long-term partners. “There is no doubt that in Berlin we saw the increase of serious interest in carrots from Israel by the European markets, in addition to the interest of our loyal customers around the world for many years. We at Shallit Carrots specialize, and know how to supply quality carrots, in all sizes suitable for all customer requirements and in compliance with all European requirements. We welcome the strengthening of relations and cooperation,” concludes Mizrahi.
