Demand for Italian potatoes exceeds supply

The demand for potatoes, especially yellow ones, seems very high, so much so that operators themselves are surprised. Azienda Agricola Di Pasquale is a company located in Abruzzo which grows and commercializes 4 potato varieties at around 700 meters asl.

"Demand is very high, though supply is limited due to the abnormal weather during cultivation, which reduced yields by at least 25%. While sales were normal until mid-January, orders have now increased by 30%, so much so that we are expecting to end the season earlier than expected, as stocks should finish around mid-March," explains owner Giancarlo Di Pasquale.

"We are flooded by phone calls from wholesale markets in central and northern Italy such as Florence, Milan, Turin and Verona. We are trying to please all clients by containing the volumes packaged every day. There is particular interest for the Agria variety, i.e. round-oval potatoes with an irregular peel and a deep yellow color, but the Laura and Viola cultivars are doing just as well. The increase in demand has led to benefits also in occupational terms, as we are managing to hire personnel in a more continuous manner."

Harvesting for the next campaign should start in September. "Transplants will start in early April and will continue throughout May. For the 2023/24 season, we have envisaged a 30% increase in cultivated areas, so as to have a more continuous relationship with our clients, maybe even with European ones, also thanks to the new packaging we are currently testing and which we will perfect for the next campaign."
