Packing line for snacking tomatoes significantly reduces labor need

The selection of tomatoes in any retail store is abundant nowadays. Both retailers and consumers ask for different types of tomatoes as well as all sorts of packaging. In response to this demand, JASA Packaging Solutions is offering packing lines that have the ability to pack most tomato varieties, from TOV to Beefsteak to snacking tomatoes. “We are able to pack in trays, bags, stand-up pouches, buckets, sustainable packing, and more,” says Joost Somford of JASA.

One of the latest developments is a tomato medley line that was specifically developed for snacking tomatoes. This weighing and packaging line makes sure all different kinds of snack tomatoes can be packed in the preferred mix of colors and sizes, all in one package. Packaging options include trays and bags, as well as paper/cardboard.

Benefits
This line provides the option to fill the package by counting for up to 16 tomato varieties and an additional top-off variety with weight at the end. “The line automatically ensures the correct contents and weight,” said Somford. Packing happens at high speed with a capacity of 35 packs/minute for counting and weighing or 50 packs/minute for the pre-mixed option, which includes only weighing. One of the benefits is the limited floor space that is needed compared to hand packing.

Another key advantage is the reduction of labor. The only stage that requires hand labor is at the beginning when the lines need to be supplied with the product. A maximum of two people are needed to feed the line with tomatoes out of crates. In later stages, no more hand labor is needed, and trays and bags are filled automatically. “In full automatic setting, the line can be operated by one or two employees,” said Somford. Below is a short video of an operating snacking tomato line.

So far, Jasa has installed tomato medley packing lines in different countries in Europe as well as North America.
