"This year we are registering an abnormal trend for onions, while the situation is pretty standard for garlic," reports Salvatore Del Prete from Del Prete in Carinaro (Caserta).
"Golden onions, whose prices are usually lower than those of white onions by at least 10/15 eurocents per kg, this year are reaching quotations of €1/kg. The reason is that demand is lively because the product is widely used and supply is limited. We are currently processing a lot of German and Austrian produce, but onion from Egypt will also become available soon. In this case too, sales prices are 85/90 eurocents per kg, which is unprecedented."
"Prices of white and red onions are increasing too, reaching 70/80 eurocents per kg. The Italian produce is about to finish and we will start processing the onions from India. Although we still do not know the purchase prices, they will definitely be high."
"Garlic is doing entirely differently, as it has a market of its own. This year, prices are practically the same as 2022, with abundant quantities from Italy and Spain."
