Interview with Pietro Paolo Ciardiello of Coop Sole

"So far we have picked twice the number of strawberries compared to last year"

"This year, because of the mild weather from fall until ten days ago, we picked larger amounts of early strawberries. However, now the colder temperatures of the past ten days have slowed down the harvest. We are still continuing the harvest, and we have already picked more than double the number of strawberries so far compared to the same dates last year. So, we are very positive about the current season," said Pietro Paolo Ciardiello, director of Coop Sole, a growers' association from Italy's Campania region.

"Compared to last year, we need to give up about 5% in sales, though. The interest in strawberries from both Italy and abroad is good. We can't even fully satisfy our customers in this period because the demand exceeds the supply. The demand for organic strawberries is also increasing. So far, our assessment of sales is more than positive."

"Our main markets remain Italy and Northern Europe. We have established solid commercial relationships there, and we are satisfied with the work done. Demand from abroad is strong. The Italian strawberry is highly appreciated there."

"It will be a fairly quiet year in terms of cultivation. Of course, you never know with the weather, but I don't foresee any moments of overproduction popping up. If each company has made a rational planning, which provides for a wide-spread calendar with nicely spaced volumes, no problems should arise."

Coop Sole begins the strawberry season in January and completes it in June. But the intention is to finish as late as possible. In addition, melon planting has already been completed, and it will now be waiting until May before sales can begin.

Strawberry is the main product of Coop Sole. Following the company philosophy with a focus on sustainability through integrated and organic growing methods, the growers' association guarantees a healthy, ethical, and tasty product with high-quality standards.
