Flagship product of Med’Essor, the Maltese from Tunisia will still be on the market for another month. This year, the campaign started a little before the usual date, on January 7th. As for many other products from the Mediterranean region, the volumes of Maltese are lower this year, “up to 30% less than last year,” according to Mourad Ben Salem.
But the event that marked the Maltese of Tunisia this year is the product recall that occurred on March 4th. “The fruit was withdrawn from sale (800 kg) because it contained a level of pesticides slightly exceeding the standards allowed. GIFruits intervened to regularize the situation. Other analyses have been carried out since then and everything is back in order!”
The incident may have slightly damaged the image of the Maltese, but there were no consequences on sales. “It has not affected sales at all, the fruit is still very much in demand. Today, sales are very fluid and even increasing.”
Med' Essor started with the Honduras melons about 20 days ago. This week, the Moroccan origin will be joining the offer, with “reasonable” prices. The market is not very dynamic because of the cold temperatures, but the campaign “should be very good”.
