Already a producer in single fruit harvesting dates, such as Angelle, Seychelle, and Sweetelle, Syngenta is now ready for a new challenge in the same segment with tomatoes grown in clusters. Remida is the result of a project that combines the typical organoleptic characteristics of a high-tasting date tomato but with low sensitivity to ToBRFV.
The new Remida date variety, which could be seen as early as 21 February at Syngenta Vegetable Seeds' showcase greenhouse in Sicily. For this reason, we visited the Research Station in Acate (RG), where we interviewed Vincenzo Salamone, Technical Sales Manager-Sicily of the seed company.
"This variety has an excellent qualitative/productive performance, such that it deserves such a special name. With the launch of this variety," said Vincenzo Salamone, "we want to provide customers with a product that can really make a difference in the segment. In fact, the name Remida does not come about at random but rather interprets all those technical and objective characteristics that must be present in a date tomato and that are being sought after by the supply chain. The ultimate goal, on the other hand, is that of profitability balanced with the issues of aesthetics, flavor, and post-harvest resilience."
"At our research center in Marina di Acate, built within the Giuseppe La Rosa farm, the characteristics of our Remida can be verified," the expert emphasized," which, moreover, performs very well in the presence of ToBRFV. Therefore, it will be possible to see live the organoleptic characteristics of this new crop, that is, flavor, appearance, LSL, including low sensitivity to the Tobamo virus. We believe that our approach, transparent and thoughtful from the very beginning, continues to be highly appreciated by the producers to whom, once again, we express our real support."
"Remida is particularly suitable for transplanting in the Sicilian counter-season areas, with high yields throughout the production cycle," concluded the interviewee. "The berry is always red and uniform. The plant is robust and vigorous and expresses itself best with our Armstrong rootstock. The continuity of production even in high stakes and the ease in agronomic management, thanks to a marked vegetative recovery even at low temperatures, are surprising."
