The new Dutch mini cucumber season has begun at Gilad Produce. The company has been carrying the mini cucumbers under its 'Cuckies' brand for the past few years and now has three hectares in production.
Frank Mosterd is confident about the season. "The winter was extremely good for the mini cucumber market and still is. Supplies from Spain and the Netherlands converge, so prices have dropped slightly, but they're still good," he says.
"We want to become a true partner for exporters in the Netherlands. With the Cuckies, we can offer them a distinctive product with which they can surprise their customers worldwide."
"Our clients say the mini cucumbers are becoming increasingly popular. They're a handy size, especially compared to standard cucumbers," Frank explains.
At Gilad Produce, the Dutch season continues in week 13 with the first (20-hectare) green bell peppers. The new (12-hectare) pepper season then begins.
"We expect the green peppers and Jalapenos (Black Bullet) in the first week of April, all special varieties will follow in the second week of April, and the first red peppers in the third week of April."
"Unlike many other greenhouse vegetables, pepper prices were dismal during the import season but have, fortunately, rebounded somewhat in recent weeks. There's considerably lower Spanish supply, so our buyers are keen for the new Dutch season to begin," Frank concludes.
