Fresh and ready for the rhubarb season, the company Kartoffel Kuhn also offers goods from the Netherlands, among others. However, as Mike Cunningham tells us, only small quantities are available at high prices given the weather conditions.
"We sell the rhubarb for 4.50 to 5.00 euros/kg. It is especially popular with bakeries, which use the produce to make pies. But for conventional grocery stores, the prices are simply too high. Because there, end consumers are estimated to face prices of 8.00 to 9.00 euros/kg." In general, similar problems also occurred with many other products sourced from the Netherlands, he said.
The wholesale company offers the rhubarb in 6-kg boxes. From week 12, sales start for rhubarb from the Palatinate. Cunningham also expects lower volumes of this commodity for the time being. "As it continues to be very cold at night, sales are also noticeably subdued, especially as prices are generally very high. It is also noticeable that customers are very restrained and are asking much less for luxury products, but are more interested in standard goods. Nevertheless, I assess the mood at the wholesale market in Mannheim as good."
