In Upper Austria, 18.1% of the area and 20.1% of the farms are currently farmed organically, and demand for organic products within retailing is increasing. The share of spending on organic products reached a new high of 11.6% in the first three quarters. In 2021, the share was 11.3 percent. Organic fruits and vegetables are doing particularly well.
"You can't imagine how retailers are trying to make sure they keep prices down, to curb inflation. Of course, we're already coming under pressure there. We have a hard time accommodating the increased production costs," vegetable farmer Ewald Mayr from Pupping told ORF. "Experts predict that organic will not be declining, but that growth is being slowed down. We've simply had extreme growth in recent years, and it's certainly leveled off now because of the current circumstances."
