Agrieuropa to increase parsley root and celeriac crops for the next winter season

"For the next winter campaign, we aim at increasing the production, cultivated areas, clients and markets of parsley roots and celeriac," reports Alberto Nocera, president of Agrieuropa in Terracina (Latina).

"We currently grow parsley roots on 10 hectares, which we aim to increase by 50% for the next campaign. Celeriac represents instead a new product on which we are carrying out field tests, but we will definitely be introducing it as of the next campaign." 

Parsley roots are available between November and May in 250 and 350 gram bunches. They can feature a tag with a QR-code upon request of the client.

During the winter campaign, Agrieuropa also handles salad, zucchini, parsley roots, daikon, turnips, kohlrabi, radishes and carrots, which are mainly destined to be exported.

FreshPlaza asked Alberto Nocera for his opinion regarding the winter vegetable campaign, and the president replied that "there were two tornadoes in September and October which damaged some greenhouses, so 10% of the production remained in the fields. Nonetheless, the season went pretty well. It was a good year for kohlrabi, carrots and daikon."

"Demand is growing for kohlrabi and we are becoming a point of reference as producers. We will increase production by 20% in 2024. It is definitely a good year, with thrilling quotations. Another interesting thing is that a new de-leafed version is available as of this year for the Swiss market."

"We are very pleased with the daikon campaign as well when it comes to both consumption, which skyrocketed since January, and prices. Turnips registered the same trend, though consumption increased in February."

"The situation is different for radishes as, due to the high temperatures at the start of the campaign, 20% of the produce remained in the fields as the market was not able to absorb it. Then demand stabilized and the produce started lacking between mid-January and late February, when prices were thrilling. At the moment, however, quotations remain low although supply is so scarce that it cannot meet market demand."

Carrots are planted on 40 hectares and are available between November and June. 90% of them are exported. "We can say we are very pleased with this season despite having lost a few plots in mid-January due to the bad weather."

To differentiate its range, Agrieuropa also produces light-colored and dark-colored zucchini on 30 hectares, available all year round. Cucumbers will become available in April. 

In addition, Agrieuropa is getting ready for the watermelon campaign that will start in May and end in September.
