Astronomers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences have discovered a record number of compact galaxies surrounding the Milky Way. Their observations were done using the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST). Some 1,400 new compact galaxies have been discovered, which is twice the number of previously known compact galaxies in the neighborhood.
Based on the colors and shapes of the galaxies, they have been named after fruits and vegetables. There are 739 green pea galaxies, 270 blueberry galaxies and 388 purple grape galaxies. The green pea galaxies are between 1.5 and 5 billion lightyears away and are forming stars at a furious rate, about 10 times that of the Milky Way.
