"We are in the final phase of a complex citrus campaign. In terms of online sales, it has nevertheless rewarded our efforts in the fields. Although our communication and promotion on online channels started late compared to our competitors, we have achieved good visibility," says Giuseppe Guagliardi, commercial director of the Sicilian brand Le arance del nonno Pippo.
"So for the next campaign, we plan to focus on rural tourism, by bringing our customers on tours around the farm and using our products as ingredients for a line of processed products. Not only jams, but also natural candied and dehydrated citrus, dried fruit slices to be used in the food industry, mainly to garnish cocktails, desserts, finger food."
It was between the late 1800s and early 1900s in the Sicilian territory of Francofonte, near a small hilly town in eastern Sicily, known to be a paradise for citrus cultivation, that a natural mutation of the red-fleshed Sanguinello orange was discovered. This variety, named Tarocco, is the one that is nowadays appreciated all over the world for its taste, fragrance and sweetness, but also for its particular organoleptic qualities.
The brand "Le arance del nonno Pippo" is produced in a small citrus grove located in the contrada Margi, in the heart of a red-fleshed orange growing area, between Francofonte and Lentini, in the Sicilian province of Syracuse, Italy. The Tarocco comune di Francofonte, harvested between January and April, is characterized by a rich and juicy pulp, a particular flavor and a thin and smooth skin.
"Our process is simple," explains Giuseppe Guagliardi. "The citrus fruits are picked, sorted and placed in wooden crates with a net weight of 10 kg. The product is not exposed to pressure or shock and, if stored in a dry, cool and ventilated place, although not treated against mold or wax, it can be kept for about 30 days. Our customers know that they are part of an environmentally friendly supply chain, where we do not use chemicals in the field and choose only wooden crates for packaging. Those who choose our products place health and flavor first, they frequently go to farmers' markets. They are educated in their purchases, as they are interested in creating a close relationship with those who produce and learn about country methods and seasonality."
"We've received thousands of orders and, fortunately, we've only experienced one delivery delay from the carrier, but no shipments have been destroyed or damaged. In fact, the wooden crate is the safest way to protect oranges. Our customers also gave us a rating of 4.8/5, which allowed us to promote Le arance del nonno Pippo with a high rating, especially emphasizing the freshness of oranges picked and shipped the same day. To expand our reach to a broader audience, we benefited from the free collaboration of a few influencers who created recipes using our oranges and shared them with their followers," concluded Guagliardi.
