This season, the traditional downward trend in prices for imported strawberries on the Polish wholesale market began in mid-February, when the volumes of Spanish strawberries sold there began to increase with a big delay. However, the average wholesale price for imported strawberries offered in the Polish wholesale trade remained above the level of previous years until the beginning of this week. EastFruit project analysts report this with reference to the fresh-market website.
It is worth noting that, the Spanish strawberry season was delayed almost until the end of March due to vegetation issues and a shift in the harvest caused by adverse weather conditions. Until the 12th week of this year, the average producer price for strawberries remained above the 2019/2022 average, according to the data of the Price Observatory of the Autonomous Government of Andalusia. However, there was a clear increase in the volume of strawberries in the local market in Spain already in the 12th week, which led to a decrease in prices by an average of 18% compared to the last week.
On the Polish market, as it usually happens, the downward trend in prices for strawberries started with some delay, and prices began falling only this week. At the same time, the decrease in prices in the segment was caused not only by an increase in the supply of strawberries from Spain but by regular supplies from Greece and Albania, too.
As a result, prices for fresh strawberries on the Polish wholesale market fell to the level of 10.00-14.00 PLN/kg ($2.33-3.26/kg) this week, that is, almost 2 times since March 24 (end of 12th week).
