It was a long night for producers in the region of Calatayud due to the frost

"Last night I had to light the paraffin candles and sprinklers at 3 o'clock in the morning"

Several points of the region of Calatayud have been affected by frosts. There have been frosts in the axis of the Jalón and in several of its tributaries, such as the Jiloca and the Manubles, and negative temperatures in Sabiñán, Morata de Jiloca, and Ateca. In this last municipality, temperatures fell to five degrees below zero.

“It's the third night of frosts. Last night I had to light the paraffin candles and sprinklers since three o'clock in the morning," stated David Garcia, from Morata de Jiloca. Now, producers will have to wait to see how the fruit trees, mostly pear trees, evolve. “Now we'll have to sulfate and make treatments that increase our costs by 25 or 30% more. We also have to take into account the gasoline used at night," he stated.

"It's too early to calculate damages, but some peach and cherry looks black inside the flower," stated Fina Martinez from Moros. In addition, there is a scarcity of rainfall and the weather has become too hot too soon for the crops, he added.

The frost in Ateca lasted many hours and according to Raul Perez, it will have done a lot of damage. In his case, he has resorted to spraying, but he acknowledged that it is the third day that temperatures fall below zero, which will affect the crops.
