The star of Easter remains the asparagus of course, but many fruits and vegetables also benefit from this festive period. “In general, exotic fruits tend to sell well during the week of Easter. People get together with their families and want to treat themselves. We can feel a certain craze from consumers who are not too concerned about prices,” explains Alain Alarcón, president of Banagrumes, which is present on the Rungis market.
At the moment, Banagrumes offers organic green asparagus from Extremadura. “We specialize mainly in organic green asparagus from Spain, which we receive from two different suppliers and market under the Bio Sélect brand. It is a product that sells well.”
Despite the difficult economic context, the wholesaler stays positive about the current year. “We have some visibility on our balance sheet for the next 6 months, since we close at the end of September. We started in early October and at the end of March, our tonnages had progressed, which also helped increase our turnover, since our prices also had to go up. This year therefore looks rather positive, even if we had a dip in February. Like everywhere else, our organic offer is also suffering, although our organic bananas continue to sell well. But overall so far, our results are better than last year.”
