The agricultural produce market committee in Talala town of Gir Somnath has decided to start the mango auctions on April 18. This will mark the beginning of the harvesting season of the juicy fruit in Junagadh and Gir Somnath districts known for the kesar variety of mangoes.
In a special meeting of commission agents and whole-sellers of the APMC on Wednesday , it was decided to start auction of mangoes from April 18 onwards. Last year, the season in Talala APMC lasted 51 days and arrivals of 505,000 boxes - each containing 10 kgs of mangoes - were recorded.
The average price was Rs 740 (€8.15) per box, the APMC said. However, this year, the harvesting season is likely to be a longer one as due to unfavorable weather, the mango crop is at different stages. While some mangoes are at the ripening stage, others are still in the early growth stage.
