The strawberry, an emblematic product of Plougastel, started its campaign last week at EARL Le Bot. The season kicked off with a bang and the arrival of the Gariguette variety. “Seasonal varieties will follow from early May with the Mariguette, Dream, Magnum, as well as the Murano in June. Specialized in red fruits, EARL Le Bot will continue with the Murano and the Favori, a novelty currently being tested, until the end of October. “The Favori is a variety with a nice color, good productivity, as well as a firm, juicy and sweet flesh,” explains Thomas Le Bot.
Contrary to last year, the strawberries have not suffered from the heat this year. “Not all products arrived at the same time, and thanks to the weather, we have good volumes and good sizes.” The demand has not decreased since Easter.
In June, EARL Le Bot will participate in the Strawberry Festival organized by the town of Plougastel. A way for professionals in the sector to promote this small red fruit to consumers.
The Plougastel strawberry has applied for a PGI
Often copied but never quite equaled, the Plougastel strawberry is waiting to obtain its own PGI. “The process is underway, it has been validated by the commission, and a survey has been conducted on-site, so we are waiting.” An important certification for the municipality, and especially for producers to “protect their know-how and their farms.” The Plougastel brand indeed sells very well, and some “do not hesitate to use our name, even if they are not from this area.”
