According to a statement by First Deputy Minister of Agriculture Oksana Lut, Russia does not plan to limit the import of potatoes and vegetables. She added that work is being intensified in the country to create varieties that can be stored for a long time.
Lut said that in 2022, 7.2 million tons of potatoes were harvested in the organized sector in the Russian Federation, which is 600 thousand tons more than in 2021. The total volume of production, taking into account private farms, amounted to 18.8 million tons. More than 13 million tons of vegetables were harvested.
And yet, there is still a need for imports. As a rule, they start in April. “We have and are building good storage facilities, and we have support measures, but in order to hold out with our vegetables until the end of the season, we need to work with varieties. What we plan to do,” she said, specifying that we are talking about varieties that have greater keeping quality, do not deteriorate, and “retain their normal, consumer-friendly characteristics.”
Speaking about the supply of tomatoes from Türkiye, limited by a quota of 350,000 tons, Lut said that this is a niche product that is not considered as a factor influencing the market. According to her, the quota has not yet been chosen, but there have been no requests to increase it. The decision to increase the quota for the supply of tomatoes from Türkiye to 350,000 tons is valid from mid-April 2022.
