"Mango market switches smoothly from Peru to West Africa"

Last year, there were plenty of mangoes from Peru and West Africa. Prices dropped, and the transition from the Peruvian to the West African season, thus, did not go smoothly. This year, however, that switch looks better. "This week, the volumes from Peru will decline sharply, and starting next week, the first volumes of Kent mangoes from Ivory Coast will trickle in," says Henk van der Meij of Hars&Hagebauer in Europe.

"Every year, it's a gamble how the link from the Ivory Coast goes, but this year it looks good. There should be 20% fewer mangoes from there, although that always has to be seen effectively. As is well known, the mango market is volatile and full of surprises. However, after a dramatic January start, it's recovered well, and prices look healthy, without dramatic peaks and troughs."

"Because of the good connection, I don't expect any major changes in the market situation either. Another advantage is that container prices are lower than last year. A healthy market situation is most welcome, too, because us importers all got bloody noses from the disastrous market in January," Henk concludes.
