As the season changes, supplies of the YOOM® Black Cocktail Tomato, which first debuted at the International Fresh Produce Association Trade Show in October 2022, are coming on. “The crop looks beautiful and is off to a great start with all the sunny days we’ve been having,” says Ryan Cherry, Director of Sales at Windset Farms®. “This last winter season was a wet one. The seasonal transition from winter to spring with light levels coming up and warmer temperatures have our plants thriving.” The crop, which is non-GMO Project Verified, is currently being grown in the grower’s hi-tech greenhouse facilities.
Cherry notes that walking through the greenhouses, the unique deep black color set against the fresh greenery is a site to see. “YOOM Cocktail Tomatoes are the color of black pearl on the outside, with a deep scarlet color on the inside, and have savory umami flavor,” Cherry says, adding that the tomatoes also contain high levels of anthocyanins, the pigment found in the tomatoes, which provide essential vitamins and minerals.
More supply means growing demand
“Demand for this unique tomato is growing with retailers and food service providers. YOOM delivers on both aesthetics and taste, and we foresee consumers continuing to respond well with more available on the market,” says Cherry. “We look forward to meeting customers at the upcoming shows, where we will sample and discuss opportunities for YOOM.”
This month on April 25-27, Windset will exhibit at the CPMA Convention and Trade Show at booth #1621 in Toronto, Ontario, and the company will also be at the FPFC show in Anaheim, California, on April 27.
