The sweet potato season is going well at Scott Farms International's European sales office. "We had a problem-free harvest in North Carolina. We have enough product from there to cover the whole summer, though the potatoes are a little larger," Pablo Fitskie says.
He says sales went smoothly at Easter this year, with no outliers. "That happened more often in other years. We're, however, not complaining about sales. January to early May remain the better months for sweet potato sales. Prices are normal, and fortunately, the dollar exchange rate is slightly more favorable again. It's at around $1.10 again, but fixed expenses are much higher."
Besides its cultivation in North Carolina, Scott Farms also grows in Portugal, and this year, for the first time, it began small-scale farming in Egypt too. From America, the company is limiting itself to the Covington variety, but the sales office will also carry some white-fleshed sweet potatoes as a service item. According to Pablo, the European sweet potato market's growth lies with the industry. "The fresh market is well divided by now, but the industry sector is booming," he concludes.
