The export of fruits and vegetables from the western Mediterranean region of Turkey increased by 26% in the first quarter of this year compared to last year. The majority of the revenues came from fresh vegetable shipments. Vegetable shipments to external markets grew by 36%, and tomato exports increased by 33% to reach. Exports of pepper increased by 47% compared to last year. Tomato and pepper exports accounted for 29% of the total export volume of the western Mediterranean region.
The President of the Association of Exporters of the Western Mediterranean Mirza Chavusoglu reported that fresh fruit exports decreased by 9% due to seasonal factors. He added that the region's export growth was due to poor weather conditions in Europe. Turkey produces approximately 55 million tonnes of fresh fruits and vegetables annually, but only around 8% of this production is exported.
