The supply of domestic stored vegetables in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia is gradually coming to an end. "We have sold a similar amount to other years this week with our last parsnips. Carrots and leeks are also running low and we expect to bring the last batches to market in two to three weeks," reports Carsten Eimers, owner of Gemüsebau Eimers vegetable farm in Hamminkeln.
For both outdoor crops, he says, harvest volumes have been quite manageable. "However, demand has also been relatively restrained in recent weeks. For leeks, the price situation is within normal limits, with offers around 1 euro/kg and 0.50 euro for stalks. For carrots, on the other hand, we are seeing persistently high quotations," says Eimers, who also points to the high operating costs, especially in cold storage.

Meanwhile, the new growing season has already begun with the planting of field crops. "Despite the persistent cold weather, we should not complain about the vegetation and crop growth so far. However, it is still too early to make precise statements." concludes Eimers.
