A new apple variety of German origin will be available exclusively in all more than 2,000 ALDI SÜD stores from October 2023. The new variety was developed by the Züchtungsinitiative Niederelbe (ZIN) in collaboration with Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences. So far, however, the new apple has not yet been given a name. For this reason, ALDI SÜD is putting the two proposed names RoyALDI and ALDIamo to the vote at aldi-sued.de/deinapfel. Among all participants, the smallest cruise in the world will be raffled: a trip from the port of Hamburg to the Alte Land, to where the new apple is grown and cultivated.
Together with the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, the Niederelbe breeding initiative has spent more than twenty years working on the perfect apple. "We specifically select the parent varieties and can cross varieties with ideal conditions with each other and thus breed the ideal apple," explains Prof. Dr. Werner Dierend from the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Agricultural Architecture at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences. In the fall of 2019, ALDI SÜD joined as a partner.
"With the ALDI SÜD apple, we can offer our customers a very special product, which on the one hand convinces in terms of taste and quality, but on the other hand offers suppliers and producers long-term planning security," emphasizes Erik Döbele, Managing Director National Buying & Services at ALDI SÜD.
The Alte Land is the largest contiguous fruit-growing area in northern Europe and offers ideal conditions for the growth of the new variety. "Twenty-five years ago, the breeding initiative decided that we had to breed new varieties in the Alte Land again, and this year the new variety will then be harvested for the first time and sold at ALDI SÜD. This is a very special story for us and of course makes us very proud," explains farmer Ulrich Buchterkirch.
