Jan Rozema, SFI:

"Early end to Spanish and Moroccan citrus seasons offers chances for South Africa"

The first lemons arriving at SFI Rotterdam kicked off the South African citrus season. Grapefruit in week 19 and mandarins in weeks 19/20 will follow. "The Spanish and Moroccan citrus seasons ended early, so we expect a good start to the overseas season. More is, thus, also being sent to the EU," says Jan Rozema.

According to the latest harvest estimate, South Africa expects 50.7 million cartons of Valencias, 25.2 million cartons of Navels, 37 million cartons of lemons, 14.1 million cartons of grapefruit, and 35 million cartons of soft citrus. "The overall sizing looks better than last year when there were mostly small sizes."

Jan explains that the European Union remains vital for South African exporters. "After the UK market, the EU is currently the best market, but that's very currency related. The big question is whether the market's empty enough for the volume arriving. Other markets are also asking," he says.

"There are, for example, many Satsumas on their way to Russia. Japan and China aren't taking much grapefruit, which could be a problem for that market in the European Union later in the season. But that's not an issue for the early grapefruit season."

Jan is confident about the citrus season. "Last season, we revamped our Supreme brand and packaged tasty, South African Tangos and Nadorcotts in it in the late season," he explains. "We got excellent feedback and will, thus, expand our program somewhat."

"The cold weather in Northwestern Europe could benefit citrus sales. But we also need nice weather so people can sit on terraces, enjoying a glass of orange juice," Jan concludes.
