Egyptian carrot exporters are in the mid-season of carrots, and report a normal year with stable production and demand, according to Mohammad Elsayed Ahmed, export manager of Egyptian producer Al Gamal.
"Carrot production for export is recent in Egypt, it only started in significant volumes in 2012. But the sector is growing with demand and volumes increasing year after year," said Mohammad.
Despite the unstable weather conditions in Egypt, the carrots are holding up well, according to the producer: "From September to February, the production period, we had a pretty good climate. We have had some problems with nematodes and fungal diseases, but they are still easy to manage."
He continues, "We are now right at the midpoint of the export campaign, which lasts from January to August. Demand is strong from Russia. We are also exporting stable volumes to some African and European destinations. But we are seeing slower than expected demand from the Gulf countries."
The season starts with low volumes exported to Europe, according to Mohammad, which is due to sufficient domestic production. But throughout the season, the main competition comes from Israel.
"Egyptian carrots will gain ground in the future. The quality is very good, as well as the yield, 20-30 tons per feddan (1 feddan = 0.42 ha). We also have easy control over the sizes, which we determine every year according to the demand," concludes Mohammad.
