As competition has intensified between Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his most prominent rival, head of the Republican People’s Party, Kamal Kılıçdaroğlu, called has on his supporters to support him, despite the heavy cost of living and the difficult economic situation in the country.

Addressing a crowd in Giresun, northern Turkey, he said: “I know that you will not sacrifice your leader for the sake of onions and potatoes.”

The president was referring to the staggering rise in the prices of onions and potatoes; the price of  1 kilogram of onions has reached 30 Turkish liras (US 1.6), and the price of a kilogram of potatoes has reached 20 Turkish liras (more than US 1), which caused great discontent in the Turkish street before the elections.
