The pineapple market is currently very stable. "It's somewhat dull, but sales are going well. Prices, although they've been slightly stronger, are still stable. The large sizes go for about €12. That price drops to €9 for the small sizes," says Mario de Goede of Dutoit Europe.
"There's a reasonable supply of pineapples, certainly not too much. I expect that to increase a little in the coming weeks. Fortunately, European summer fruit isn't on the market in large numbers yet, but a bit more is expected next week. The weather's nice in southern Europe now, so there will definitely be a good summer fruit supply," Mario explains.
Dutoit imports all its pineapples from Costa Rica. "They have stable production and good quality." The company focuses less on specialties and more on standard lines. "Marketing-wise, there are few standouts. For us, crownless pineapples aren't a very big market, but that, too, remains stable. More brands, including us, are promoting the colored pineapple more," Mario concludes.
