The melon and watermelon campaign is about to start at O.P. Agricola Campidanese, i.e. the Sardinian organization that commercializes its produce under the L'Orto di Eleonora brand. FreshPlaza has talked about it with director Salvatore Lotta.
"We started with covered melons around April 25th, which are sold to some Italian supermarkets at variable prices between €2 and €3/kg. As for other types of melons such as Piel de Sapo, Corallo and Majores, we will have to wait for May 20th when the first volumes will be harvested. The same goes for the Gavina and Eleonora mini-watermelons."
"The interest for these summer products is looking promising. Clients are fully aware of the high-quality of 'L'Orto di Eleonora' products, has they boast a distinctive color, texture and weight. We are still waiting for higher volumes to start shipping abroad so as to provide constant supplies. Both covered and open-field crops are looking good and fruits are growing and/or ripening. Of course we would like the weather to be more stable, not only for our productions, but also because sales would be livelier, thus guaranteeing a good start to the campaign."
The harvesting and commercialization of melons and watermelons will continue until late-September despite a 30% drop in cultivated areas.
