The Consorzio Dolce Passione has been set up

Black rind and red flesh: the midi seedless watermelon the big retail chain was looking for

Characterized by a bright red flesh and a dark green - almost black -rind, Dolce Passione watermelons are now part of a consortium. Consorzio Dolce Passione was in fact presented at Macfrut - a fully Italian project that is the result of over 7 years of research that have brought to the tables of consumers a much appreciated product after more than 30 years.

For this year, the consortium has estimated a production of 9,000 tons from crops covering around 200 hectares, i.e. triple those of 2022. To extend the commercialization period, greenhouses and open fields will be distributed all over the national territory: 50% in the north, 30% in the south and 20% in the center with an estimated production of 8,500 tons considering 95% of crops, i.e. 1.5% of the domestic production.

The presentation at Macfrut moderated by the Tg5 journalist Gioacchino Bonsignore

"Dolce Passione is a project of Italian genetics born thanks to teamwork that has seen the involvement of Lamboseeds (Sant'Agata Bolognese) when it comes to experimentation and advanced research, together with the production and commercial world with Alma Seges (Eboli, Salerno), Ortofrutta Castello (Stanghella, Padua) and Lorenzini Naturamica (Sermide, Mantua). The objective is to promote black-rind seedless watermelons - which entered the market with excellent results last year - thanks to a consortium presided over by Roberto Castello," reported director Luciano Trentini. .

Boasting new-generation genetics, sorted in Italy and cultivated for the domestic market and northern Europe, fruits are mainly of the "Giotto" cultivar. The rind is very fine, black, bright and uniform, with a lively and crunchy red flesh, a considerable sugar content (Brix level above 12) and rich in fiber also thanks to the fact that they are seedless.

If grown at high temperatures, the flavor is even sweeter. Due to their characteristics, they can be placed in the midi segment with weights varying between 4 and 6 kg, very convenient for consumers as well.
