Recently, Bulgarian sweet cherry has appeared on the markets in Bulgaria, selling for no more than 5.11 euros per kilogram, while imported fruit is sold for 35.80 euros per kilogram. However, according to Zhivka Grozdeva from the Bulgarian Horticulture Association, there are relatively few Bulgarian sweet cherries on the markets and there are only a few imports from Turkey or Greece, hence the speculative price.
Early sweet cherries almost completely froze on March 30th. Therefore, farmers do not expect a favourable year for harvest and price on the market for the end consumer. The reason for the increase in the price of the fruit is the high cost of harvesting sweet cherries, Grozdeva also noted. By the end of June, the price will normalize and be around 3 euros per kilogram.
Bulgaria is a major manufacturer and exporter of sweet cherries in Europe. However, farmers cannot insure against frost until April 20th.
