Malaga's medlar harvest has come to an end and producers have harvested between 150,000 and 200,000 kilos, a very similar volume to last year, according to Miguel Angel Sanchez, the manager of the San Isidro cooperative in Sayalonga. This volume is similar to the volume obtained in the last five years, but it's very far from the volumes achieved a decade ago when producers harvested 400,000 kilos, he added.
The size of the fruit was smaller in this campaign because of the drought but we can't complain about the prices, he stated. "At the beginning of the campaign prices stood near four euro a kilo and then they stayed at a euro and a half," he said. He also highlighted the luxury of having such a delicate product.
Medlar is so delicate that it's practically impossible to export it, he stated, noting that Sayalonga medlar is marketed and consumed in the province, where "it is gradually recovering the land it lost seven or eight years ago when producers started to replace it for more profitable crops, such as mango."
