In the imported durian market, durians in eastern Thailand are at the end of their production season, and durians in the south are expected to be on the market in mid-June; at the same time, Vietnam’s Kanyao durians will usher in a peak arrival. Due to the strong market demand, durian has attracted much attention in the fruit market in the past two months.

Durian is one of the main imported products of Guizhou Shouyang Enterprise Management Co., Ltd. Regarding the market performance of Thai durian this season, Mr. Xiang Dong of the company said: "The market performance of Thai durian this season is better than that of previous years. So far, the import volume of the Chinese market is close to 26,000 containers, an increase of 20% over last year. Due to the drought and little rain in Thailand during the production season, the taste is ideal, which makes the market demand stronger and promotes overall consumption. This year, prices in production areas have risen by 15%-20%, and there has been no significant price reduction throughout the production season."
It is understood that this year's durian production season in eastern Thailand started about a month earlier than before and will end earlier. "During the peak period at the end of April and early May, Thailand's durian export volume was about 900 containers per day; and around May 11, due to the sharp drop in production at the end of the season, the daily export volume was little more than 50 containers. "
Thai Monthong Durian
On the other hand, Vietnamese durians went on the market in early May and entered the first wave of arrival peak in the middle of the month. During the peak period from mid-May to mid-June, Kanyao is the main variety, and its output is relatively large; Vietnam's Monthong Durian will be launched in large quantities in August.
"Vietnamese durians have been sold in the Chinese market since September last year. The market acceptance is quite satisfactory. In May last year, Vietnamese durians had not yet been exported to China. Compared with the same period last year, the current farm-gate price has increased by about 30%. Starting to export to China is the main reason and now about 100 containers are exported every day. With the decrease in the arrival of durians from Thailand, it is expected that the price and sales of durians from Vietnam will increase from now until the end of May, and will gradually decrease in mid-June. The launch of durians from southern Thailand in mid-June, will have an impact on Vietnamese durians, and a large number of seasonal fruits, such as domestic lychees and watermelons, are going to be launched in June, giving consumers more choices."
Vietnamese Kanyao Durian
Regarding the market competition between durians in Thailand and Vietnam, Xiang believes that the overlap between the two production seasons will be brief, and the head-to-head impact between mainstream varieties will be lessened; in addition, more and more customers like durians every year, and demand is increasing. Vietnamese durian can be regarded as a supplement to the market.
