Ukraine has developed and implemented a national standard for food potatoes. The regulations will be enforced according to the order issued by the Ukrainian Scientific Research and Educational Center for Standardization and Quality Certification from June 1st.
Under the new standard, potatoes in Ukraine will be categorized as early or late based on the time of collection. Furthermore, the quality of potatoes will be classified into three grades: extra, grade 1, and grade 2. Potatoes will also be classified as washed or unwashed based on their intended purpose. Also, the national standard specifies essential characteristics and norms for potatoes according to their sort.
It is worth mentioning that currently, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Ukrainian potatoes, which could potentially be available for export from Ukraine, do not meet the quality parameters of the European Union (EU) or even the markets of countries that were formerly part of the USSR.
