"We have pears on offer all year round. Through a supplier called Sandri, who grows pears himself, we will obtain our goods from Italy. As soon as the Italian season is over, we purchase overseas produce from Argentina and Chile, via the same supplier. The next season for Italian produce will start in late August/early September," says Gianluca Rapalli from Cavalleri Ettore, at the Munich wholesale market.

He says the amount on offer is comparable to last year's. "However, last year's lack of water meant that much of the Italian produce was of smaller calibers." The price is at a medium level, he said. "The price difference between Argentina and Italy is caused by the transportation costs. Demand is relatively slow at the moment, trending toward stone fruit and melons instead."
The main buyers include food retailers and weekly markets, while occasional catering customers stop by Cavalleri Ettore's stand as well. The pears are marketed in wooden crates of 12-24 per crate. "Currently, we have the Abate and Williams varieties available. At the beginning of the season, we also offer the Carmen, Santa Maria and Kaiser Alexander varieties."
