This year, farmers have significantly increased the area under onion cultivation, which will lead to a significant reduction in prices for this vegetable when the main harvest begins.
This was stated by the first deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, Taras Vysotskyi. According to him, the current price increase is because 80% of commercial onion cultivation took place in the Kherson region of Ukraine. Due to the temporary occupation of this region in 2022, onions did not enter the Ukrainian market, resulting in a shortage that persists. However, in the spring, farmers from other regions, understanding the situation, increased the area under cultivation of vegetables, including onions, by at least 25-30%.
“In two to three months, the main onion harvest will begin, and the peak of very high prices will end. Then the cost will stabilize. We cannot predict the end of the story due to the weather, which may or may not be favourable. We understand that onion prices may decrease,” said Taras Vysotskyi.
