"Looking back on the past season, Dutch onion supplies should have dried up eight weeks ago. But we still trade old-crop onions every day," says Daily Onions' Adriaan van Belzen. "Whether the year's great or terrible depends on if you look at revenues or sales achieved. We can keep listing obvious truths, but what the onion world says is happening and what really is can be quite different."

"The Quality Control Bureau export figures are supposedly correct, and as long as no one proves otherwise, we accept it as such," Adriaan explains. "There's no question that it's a tight market with unusually high prices. Luckily no one knows how the next few months will go, but we won't run out of onions."
"Egypt benefited from the onion market's tightness, but its onions' qualities have been variable. I also expect the upcoming red import season to be extremely short. We're looking forward to a normal onion season where everyone can get their feet back on the ground," Adriaan concludes.
