In Kazakhstan, the capacity of vegetable and fruit storage facilities is only about 35.4%. The largest deficit is in potato and fruit storage facilities, which leads to a shortage of products and an increase in prices during the winter and spring periods. This results in the import of products. The most noticeable increase in prices was on cabbage and onions, of which insufficient volumes are grown to supply the domestic market but are nevertheless exported from Kazakhstan in significant quantities.
The absence of climate control equipment in Vegetable storage facilities in Kazakhstan leads to the loss of crops due to the spoilage of vegetables. According to data, only 16.6% of vegetable storage facilities are equipped with climate and humidity control systems.
One-third of vegetable storage facilities in the country have been in operation for over 20 years, and construction of new warehouses remains low. The existing plan involves building new warehouses for storing 154.2 thousand tons of vegetables by 2025, which will not solve the problem. The only way to eliminate the shortage of vegetable storage facilities is to build new warehouses with a capacity of 180 thousand tons annually starting in 2026.
