Esasem presented its bell pepper and tomato range for the new 2023/24 campaign during a dedicated event attended by over 360 operators.
The audience at the Esasem event in Ragusa, Sicily
The first speech was held by Marco Martelli, a breeder specializing on bell peppers for Esasem SPA. The geneticist immediately stressed the international dimension of the company as he talked about the global bell pepper market.
Marco Martelli, bell pepper breeder
"Esasem's bell pepper breeding program aims at the high-profitability hi-tech market. We want to establish ourselves with élite genetics also through one of the key objectives of the entire genetic improvement program: offering a range of high added value for resistances to the main biotic stresses with an eye to crop sustainability and varietal innovation," stressed Marco Martelli.
Innovation in the bell pepper range
The presentation also focused on the Esasem range specific to the Sicilian market, the fruit of years of dedicated experimentation in the main cultivation areas. There are numerous introductions for the pre-commercial phase that is about to be registered, the result of new high-performance genetics resistant to the main pathogens such as Tobamovirus (HR: Tm: 0-3), Tomato spotted wilt virus (IR: TSWV:0) and Leveillula taurica (IR: lt).

The breeder then concluded with a description of the half-long range, which includes Bacco F1, Virgilio F1, Iride F1, and Ennio F1 (new Esasem options for transplants in Licata, Vittoria, and Santa Croce Camerina), horn peppers Libeccio F1 and Grecale F1, and the Rocal F1 and Maqueda F1 rootstocks.
SAKATA rootstocks
It was then the turn of Sergio Amore, promoter of SAKATA Vegetable Europe Sas, of which Esasem is the exclusive distributor in Italy. Amore talked about rootstocks and specifically about "the tomato rootstock varieties developed by SAKATA Ficus F1, Auracaria F1, and Sequoia F1."
Sergio Amore
The quantity of data and numerous tests carried out both in nurseries and greenhouses is impressive, and they show the complex work that lies behind the selection of a rootstock. The three tomato rootstocks meet various degrees of vigor with an impressive resistance package, and they are proof of the determination of Sakata and Esasem when it comes to their presence on the tomato rootstock market with extremely professional products. Esasem is already present on the market with eggplant, cucurbit, and bell pepper rootstocks.

Esasem tomato varieties - a point of reference for the segment
Giovanni Denaro, Island Area Manager for Esasem SPA, presented the new tomato varieties, especially plum varieties. For the latter, Esasem is a point of reference with the Lobello F1 variety, which won the Spanish Sabor del Año award for two years running.
Giovanni Denaro
"We are a point of reference all over Europe with Lobello F1 thanks to its quality. The meticulous work carried out by our breeders helped us register the variety in the new hybrid register offering top quality and adaptability to various seasonal cycles. We introduced Solbello F1 plum tomatoes for March to July transplants, Tybello F1 for June to September transplants, and Jungi F1 for transplants from October onwards.

Denaro then talked about what is new in the Sanmarzano and bunch (smooth round) tomato segment with Ionico F1, appreciated by producers for its high-quality and extraordinary productivity, and Hybla F1, characterized by an impressive elegance and bright red color.
The meeting was attended by the entire "Esasem Sicily" team, made up of Raffaele Micciché, product promotion and development manager, and agents Gugliemo Guarino and Andrea Occhipinti.
"I would like to thank all those who contributed to the success of the event. The many people who attended the event are proof of the trust they place in us and are what pushes us to do increasingly better."
