Asaja Almería reports that "as we already saw happen a few weeks ago with watermelon, melon prices are currently insignificant" since there is "no demand" for the product on offer. "However, in the shelves of the province of Almeria itself, the consumer price exceeds the one received by the growers by 650%."
"Also, the fruit's production cost this campaign has increased by 30%, similarly to what we've seen happen to other products. Therefore, Almeria's producers are suffering a new setback in the market and building up losses."
"In the current campaign, the quality of Almeria's melon has been excellent, as usual, so the prices paid at origin are unfair. In the opinion of ASAJA-Almeria, the weather cannot be an excuse for top quality foods such as those produced in Almeria to not be given the value they deserve in the market, especially given the level of investment and effort required of our professionals."
In this context, the agricultural organization has recalled the need for proper crop planning for each season and cycle. Only with correct and exhaustive crop planning at the beginning of the campaign is it possible to ensure the profitability of this activity, both for the autumn-winter campaign, as well as the spring-summer one.
"The growers' profitability cannot depend on the weather and the ups and downs of the market. Therefore, it is necessary that marketers plan their production and sales," says Adoración Blanque, president of ASAJA-Almería.
