Enes Cakmak, junior managing director of Fresh Maximum:

Good demand for Moroccan watermelons at low price range

Since the end of April, fresh watermelons from Moroccan production have been available from the Stuttgart-based company Fresh Maximum GmbH, as junior managing director Enes Cakmak tells us. "We receive five to seven truck deliveries per week, which corresponds to about 150 tons. In addition to that, we also offer seedless watermelons from Spain as well as produce from Turkey."

The price range of watermelons is currently 0.70 per 0.75 EUR/kg, he said. For all origins, he is seeing very good demand. Watermelons are sold by the company throughout Germany, and they are also exported to France, Austria as well as Switzerland. "Our customer base includes discounters as well as supermarkets."

The dramatic drop in the Turkish lira exchange rate is definitely an advantage for Fresh Maximum GmbH, which also includes a store in Turkey, he said. "We buy the goods in lira and then sell them in turn in euros. Accordingly, we can also realize higher sales."

Prices for stone fruit from Italy and Spain normalized
"Since we work with a top supplier for Italy and Spain, there have been no problems with the delivery of the respective goods so far." He also said good demand could be seen for stone fruit from the two countries. Italian cherries in particular have seen good sales. "The price for stone fruit was quite high at the start of the season, however, the situation is gradually returning to normal," says Cakmak. Furthermore, the Stuttgart-based company is preparing for a good grape season with Vittoria, Regina and Palieri varieties from Italy and Sultanas from Turkey.
