According to the data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, Spain devoted 61,922 hectares to producing potatoes in 2023, i.e. 2.5% fewer hectares than in 2022.
Despite experiencing a 5% reduction over the previous campaign, the area is led by Galicia with 17,770 hectares. It is followed by Castilla y León, which concentrates 16,639 hectares (+1.4%), and Andalusia with 8,522 hectares (-5.7%).
In this campaign, Spain devoted 3,156 hectares to extra-early varieties (+3.9%). Murcia concentrated 1,012 hectares, almost doubling the area of 2022. Meanwhile, Andalusia experienced a 15% drop with 753 hectares. The Canary Islands experienced a 3% decrease in the area but continue to lead this section with 1,212 hectares.
The area devoted to early potatoes decreased by 4.3% totaling 12,902 hectares. Andalusia leads this sector with 4,935 hectares, almost the same area as in 2022. In Murcia, the area dedicated to these varieties decreased by 370 hectares, i.e. almost 15%, and stood at 2,250 hectares.
The area devoted to mid-season varieties decreased by 4% this season and stood at 28,690 hectares. Castilla y Leon leads this section with 5,443 hectares, increasing its surface area by 110 hectares more (+ 2%).
Finally, there are 17,174 hectares (+0.5%) of late varieties. As with the mid-season varieties, this section is led by Castilla y León with 11,196 hectares, i.e. 120 more hectares than in the previous season (+1.1%).
