More than 75% of Saint Lucia’s banana and plantain crops were destroyed as Tropical Storm Bret hit the island on June 22. Minister for Agriculture Alfred Prospere has stated that in recent months, Saint Lucia has been unable to grow enough bananas to meet international demand. Now, this is a serious blow to the sector.
Saint Lucia has only been able to deliver around half of the 15,000 boxes of bananas per week that are needed for export in the region.
