Polo Group Company: "We have to act and make decisions in the face of a bleak start to the 2023 campaign"

"Brazil, Central America and the Caribbean could be key markets for our Spanish garlic this year"

"This year, the work and effort of our producers in Spain have again gone to waste at the beginning of the garlic campaign, in the months of May and June. A big squall remained in the Iberian Peninsula for more than 20 days and brought heavy storms and a lot of rainfall that has affected more than 80% of the production and taken a toll on the quality of the garlic, causing spots to appear on the skin," says Rafael Polo, of the Polo Group Company.

"This season, growers had been feeling very optimistic, because it was expected to be one of the best campaigns of the last 10 years. They were counting on great quality garlic with the right color and size, as well as a higher profitability, since garlic has been reaching relatively high prices in the Chinese market compared to other seasons.

"Faced with this situation, we have to act and make decisions. It is time to support our producers and work together to find solutions to this adversity that is greatly affecting and threatening garlic cultivation in Spain."

"The problem is figuring out what do with all the spotted garlic. If we are not able to sell all that garlic before September, when it is time to put the garlic in chambers, we could have some serious problems in the medium term, since a lot of the garlic was hit by the rains and the main part of the bulb is wet," said Rafael Polo. "At our firm, the Polo Group Company, which has a wide portfolio of customers and is present in more than 40 countries, we will do our best to support our professional commercial team in different parts of the world and allow the marketing of as much garlic from our producers in Spain as possible. In fact, Brazil, Central America and the Caribbean could be key markets for our Spanish garlic this year."

"We have quality garlic available"
"In Spain, only between 15 and 20% of the total garlic production that could be harvested in advance before the rains is available. This entails a very considerable drop in the marketable volume of unspotted garlic. However, with the support of our regular growers/suppliers, whom we thank and with whom we work throughout the year, we are providing all our consolidated customers with a regular service, setting up business lines with a strong commitment to our customers and our associated growers."

The Polo Group Company is present in different countries, managing and supporting producers in the field of exports, providing advice on document management and logistics, and performing additional quality controls at origin to ensure customer satisfaction. "In our company, we work to find the best market solutions for our customers and producers, providing value in commercial management. 'Work with us!'" says CEO Rafael Polo.
