"We started the season for Turkish watermelons about three weeks ago," Murat Günes from Westfalen Frischdienst GmbH informs us. "The season for Moroccan produce is now over. With the Spanish goods there are currently again considerable quality problems, which is why we have decided to fall back on Turkish goods. Within the three weeks that we have been offering the watermelons from Turkey, we have not had a single complaint. They have surprisingly stable qualities."

Günes reports that Morocco also has problems with the drought. However, he was able to sell the Turkish goods quite quickly. "The follow-up purchase is also turning out very well. Last week, Thursday, we had a truck delivery of ten tonnes, which was already sold out at the beginning of the week. Now we are waiting for the next delivery." Originally, the produce was sold in 16-kg to 19-kg cartons and then in smaller boxes. He said the Turkish product was sold at about EUR 0.40/kg cheaper than the Spanish product.
Although the lira continues to lose value, this does not have a negative impact. "In the case of Turkish goods, which consist of ingredients that Turkey has to import itself, this is also expressed through increases in price for us. But for products that are produced or grown in Turkey itself, we can actually benefit."
Apart from that, he said, he would have to accept an extremely high additional payment for electricity costs in 2022.Transport costs are also quite high, he said, with container prices slowly returning to pre-Corona times."However, prices do not pose challenges for us at all."
