The potato harvest in Castile-Leon, the most representative in terms of production volumes in Spain, has started between 7 and 10 days earlier than last year. The early potato campaigns in southern Spain, highly marked by the rains, are already over.
"Right now we are starting with the potato campaign in Castilla-Leon and working with the last stocks from Andalusia, Murcia and Castile-La Mancha," says Juan Manuel Coello, of the Valladolid-based company Patatas Meléndez. "At the moment, we are obtaining good yields, commercial sizes and a good quality product."
"The productions in the south have been marked by excessive rainfall, which has reduced the supply and delayed the harvest, which had to be brought to a halt during the rainy weeks. It has been a difficult campaign with little continuity and periods of shortages that have caused prices to rise to all-time highs in the free market, which has taken a toll on consumption," he says.
According to Juan Manuel Coello, the potato harvest in Castile-Leon is expected to bring the supply and demand in the markets in balance again.
