Malaga province potato growers are faced with low prices

June and July are the months in which growers harvest their potatoes. Between the Vega de Antequera and some municipalities on the Costa del Sol, approximately 500 hectares in the province are dedicated to potato cultivation in Malaga province. However, potato growers are faced with current market prices of some 0.36 euros per kilo. "Producing that kilo costs the farmer around 0.32 euros. For it to be a minimally profitable activity, the kilo would have to be paid at 0.50 euros,” said one grower.

Many potato farmers in the province are facing hardships as a result after investing capital in a crop that now has no economic return. Consumers will notice however that a kilo of potatoes at the supermarkets is more than 1.50 euros. Growers claim that produce coming from Egypt is dragging down prices.
