Hungarian watermelon growers claim that Penny supermarket offers Hungarian watermelons at such a low prices this week, that they cannot cover the production costs. According to the Hungarian Chamber of Agriculture, the Hungarian Melon Growers Association, and the FruitVeB Hungarian Interbranch Fruit and Vegetable Organization and Product Council, the discount chain’s move is unacceptable. However, according to the supermarket chain, products bought at the prevailing market price are sold to customers at a lower retail margin than usual.
At present, the price of domestic watermelon from suppliers is around 220 forints (EUR 0,58). At the same time, Penny’s consumer price of 229 forints (EUR0,61) implies a supplier price of 140-150 forints (EUR 0,37-0,4), which does not even cover the significantly increased production costs this year, they pointed out.
